England is totally not with the times on naming roads and towns.

“It’s pronounced ‘PENNIS-tun,’ ” Fiona Moran, manager of the Old Vicarage Hotel in Penistone, said over the telephone, rather sharply. When forced to spell her address for outsiders, she uses misdirection, separating the tricky section into two blameless parts: “p-e-n” — pause — “i-s-t-o-n-e.”

I mean, dang.

I mean, dang.

Read the NY Times article here. It’s pretty funny.

Water Walk

January 15, 2009

In 1960, influential composer John Cage was on the game show “I’ve Got a Secret” for some reason. On the show, a panel tries to guess why the guest is there while the audience and host know.

It’s really funny to watch a mainstream 1960 audience try to react to Cage’s piece “Water Walk.” You can see his interest in the element of chance come into play.
